By: Eddie So, U.S. Navy Veteran, Workshop Attendee (April 2022)
Thank you to Eddie So, a veteran and recent workshop attendee, for sharing about his experience here at War Horse Creek. Eddie was among the first to stay at the newly constructed Camp Harris from April 7-10, 2022.
Working with the Mustangs
“I was surprised by how subtle the interactions can be when leading a horse. Body language, emotions, and intent are just as critical as easing off at the right time when interacting and leading horses.”
Connecting with Other Veterans
“I was fortunate enough to be able to connect with the other veterans during the workshop. Everyone that attended had an open mind and were accepting of others. It allowed me to bond with them and open up to them during discussions over the campfire at night. We may have similar experiences or very different experiences, but that doesn’t keep us from listening to each other and learning about one another. That in itself is a form of support.”
Highlights of the Workshop
“It would be hard to pick a favorite or most memorable part of the workshop. The whole experience impacted me in a very positive and memorable way from interacting with the horses, instructors, and fellow veterans, to just enjoying the stillness and peace of nature. There were moments where thoughts in my mind were quiet and calm just like the surroundings and moments where connections were made in my thoughts to previous memories while listening to others talk and share their stories. None of the conversations were forced and sometimes we would just take in the peace and quiet while sitting around the campfire. Then someone would tell a silly story or bring up a topic and an hour or two later it could be about the struggles someone had faced or is currently facing. Then the next morning we would begin working with the horses and even if only for a few moments I became a reflection of the energy, emotions, and control needed to lead the horses.”
The Biggest Takeaway
“When listening to the perspective of others with an open mind it is hard not to take away something from it or make connections to your own thoughts. In turn those connections can change your own perspective and sometimes that change in viewpoint can bring a little peace, closure, or understanding.”
Why Should Veterans Come to War Horse Creek?
“I would definitely recommend the workshop to other veterans. If not for all the reasons above, then at least for the peace and change of pace that staying in Camp Harris War Horse Creek will give. Also it’s beautiful up there and the air is fresh, and eventually being able to learn to ride a horse is cool. I’m ready for it, Ray.”
Put me in coach, I’m ready 🙂
