Have you ever wondered what your cat is thinking? Cats have a unique way of communicating with us through their eyes. Subtle changes in a cat’s eyes can tell you a lot about their state of mind.
The pupils of a cat’s eye play a special role – not only do they dilate and constrict with changes in light, but they will also widen and narrow based on their mood.
- Happy – Narrowed pupils can be an indication that your cat is happy and content. If they are purring and squinting, they are most likely in a very happy state.
- Angry – Pupils also tend to get smaller and narrower when your pet is feeling aggressive or angry. Paired with wide eyes and a rapidly moving tail, narrow pupils may mean you should give your pet some space.
- Excitement – Widened pupils can be an indication that your pet is excited and highly stimulated. Often during play, you may notice your cat’s eyes turn into giant saucers as they run around the room.
- Fear – Dilated pupils can also mean a cat is feeling fearful. When a cat is very still or possibly even recoiling away from you with big, wide eyes, they are likely telling you they are feeling scared.
- Relaxed – Half-closed eyes and normal sized pupils typically show that a cat is feeling relaxed and comfortable.
Looking at your cat’s pupils, combined with their body language cues and vocalizations, you can start to understand what your cat might be trying to tell you. It is important to remember that your cat is ‘speaking’ not just their eyes, but their whole body. When observing any cat, make sure to note their eyes, ears, posture, tail, and vocalizations.
